Animals in confinement shall be prevented from entering surface <br /> water. <br /> f. All precipitation and surface drainage outside of manured areas, <br /> including that collected from roofed areas, shall be diverted <br /> away from manured areas, unless such drainage is fully retained. <br /> 4. For ground water protection: <br /> a. Manure storage areas shall be managed to minimize percolation of <br /> water into underlying soils. <br /> b. Application of wastewater to cropland and disposal fields shall <br /> be managed to minimize percolation to ground water. <br /> C. Animal confinement facilities shall have adequate surface <br /> drainage to prevent continuous accumulation of surface water in <br /> corrals and feed yards. <br /> d. Application of manures and wash waters to croplands shall be at <br /> rates which are reasonable for the crop, soil , climate, special <br /> a local situations, management system, and type of manure. <br /> e. The salt in animal rations should be limited to that required to <br /> maintain animal health and optimum production. <br /> f. Wastewater retention ponds shall be lined with or underlain by <br /> soils which contain at least ten percent clay and not more than <br /> ten percent gravel or artificial materials of equivalent <br /> impermeability. These ponds shall also be sited, designed, <br /> constructed, and operated to ensure that wastes will be a minimum <br /> of five feet above the highest anticipated elevation of <br /> underlying ground water. <br /> C. Provisions: <br /> 1. The discharger may be required to submit technical reports as directed <br /> f by the Executive Off-icer. <br /> x <br /> 2. If the number of animal units are increased by more than ten percent <br /> above the level stated in the Findings, the Discharger shall submit a <br /> Technical Report which clearly demonstrates that the increase will .not <br /> be a threat to water quality. The Discharger will use the method <br /> described in Attachment B to calculate animal units. <br /> VHM-2 <br />
