• percent of this precipitation percolates to the aquifer, the value of 9.22 inches average
recharge of rainfall is obtained.
The nitrate concentration of rainfall was estimated to be 1 mglL-N (Hantzsche and
Finnemore).
QuantitLand Quality of Domestic Wastewater
A single-family residence used as a clubhouse, two barns, and 16 recreational vehicle
trailers are currently located on the Site. According to the site plan prepared by
Benchmark Engineering, nine of the trailers are to be relocated, and a new clubhouse
will be constructed on the Site.
Steve Faughn, owner of the Site, was interviewed by telephone on March 3, 2017. Mr.
Faughn stated that the clubhouse on the Site has two bedrooms but is not used as a
residence. He indicated that the 16 recreational vehicle trailers each have one
bedroom. They are occupied only three days per week for 100 consecutive days during
duck hunting season, amounting to a total of 42 to 45 days per the year, he said. When
the trailers are in use, only one person occupies each trailer, and only half of the trailers
are occupied at a time, he indicated. In addition to typical use, once a year a party is
held at the Site which is attended by 40 to 50 people. Mr. Faughn stated that the new
clubhouse will be constructed with two bedrooms but will not be used as a residence.
The 16 trailers and new clubhouse will share a septic system, according to the site plan.
• Once construction is completed, two people may begin living in the old clubhouse as
caretakers of the property, Mr. Faughn said.
Because Mr. Faughn has indicated that the new clubhouse will not be used as a
residence and the trailers are only used periodically, for the purpose of this study two
scenarios will be discussed, a typical use scenario and a full-occupancy scenario.
Crites and Tchobanoglous (1998) list a typical flow rate of 50 to 70 gallons per person
per day for an individual residence. The San Joaquin County Enviromental Health
Department has indicated that maximum flow and double occupancy within each
bedroom should be considered for nitrate loading analysis; as a result, a value of 140
gallons per bedroom per day has been selected (personal communication, January 6,
2017). For the guests at the annual party, a bar customer value of 5 gallons per
customer (Crites and Tchobanoglous, 1998) has been selected as best matching
anticipated use.
The estimated flow values discussed here should not be used for the design and sizing
of the septic system. The design and sizing of the septic system should utilize the San
Joaquin County Environmental Health Department's On-Site Wastewater Disposal
Standards which incorporate peak and surge flow factors. The estimates used in the
On-Site Wastewater Disposal Standards may be greater than those discussed here.
• LOGE 1708 Page 11
