January 16,2004
Sob Number:LG03-304
Page 14 i
FF' maximum contaminate level of 45 mg/L-N." Though the drinking water sample obtained from a
neighboring well does not indicated a high nitrate level, EHD staff has indicated to our office the..
shallowg round water zone in the area experiences high levels of nitrate pollution.
The.nitrate loading balance was performed for the proposed project. Based on the assumptions
used in this report'and assumptions of the Hantzshe & h'innemore equation,•the proposed project
will potentially cause a buildup of nitrates above 10 mg/L-N in the shallow aquifer. This is
mostly du c to the small-size of the parcel,and-relatively low amount of deep percolation of rain
IF fall.
Based:on the study, our office believes the proposed project is suitable for development with an
engineered septic system designed to reduce the nitrate concentration of the septic waste.water.
In our experience with similar projects, it is our opinion the following will be required to move
the project'forward:
One copy of this report should be submitted'to the Central Valley Regional Water
Quality.Control Board (CVRWQCB), to the attention of Mr. Tim O'Brien, for
' review. After review, the Board 'Will determine weather they will become the lead .
agency for,the proposed proj ect. If so, they may require a report of waste
discharge. If not, the,San Joaquin County Environmental Health Department will
be the lead agency for project approval. The contact information for the
CVRWQCB.is provided next: ,
Central Valley Regional Water' Quality Control Board
Attention: Mr. Tim O'Brien
11020 Sun Center Drive#200
f Rancho Cordova, CA 95670-6114
Phone: (916)464-3291
—It is our opinion that the project will D. wire an en ineered se tic system to reduce the
concentration of nitrates in waste water to'a concentration below 10 ing/L-N. The
Sari Joaquin County Environmental Health Department has indicated to our office .
that the underlying aquifer has experienced significant degradation of water
quality due to nitrates leaching from septic systems. Several nearby businesses
. rely on shallow water wells for drinking water. We understand that other new
businesses.reciently developed in the area utilize'engineered septic systems to
reduce nitrate impacts.from their septic systems. We understand that the use of an
engineered septic system will be required by the Environmental°Health.
Department should they become the lead agency which is likely. To mitigate the
high nitrate levels, we would recommend a-MicroSe Tec, Orenco Advantex, or
YSSpG\
