GENERAL INSTALLATION REQUIREMENTS—Rectangular
McTighe Industries provides specifically tailored Installation, Operation and
Maintenance Manuals for every separator project we work on. Site conditions sometimes
dictate modifications to our standard installation instructions. The following instructions can
be used as a guideline for the installation requirements of our Rectangular oil-water
separators.
1. Upon delivery of the separator and accessory equipment, inspect the unit(s) for damage to
exterior and interior including protective coating(s). Remove top cover plate, inspect
unit(s)and determine that all internal baffle plates and internal piping are secure. When
removing cover, be careful to lift slowly so as not to damage the gasket between the top
flange of separator and the cover.
2. Separator must be installed in a level and plumb position for proper system function.
Piping to separator must be pitched in elevation 1/16"to 1/4" per foot, to obtain a proper
gravity system.
3. Where air or hydrostatic testing is required, internal pressure must not exceed 1 1/2
pounds per square inch (PSIG) while a soap solution is applied to weld seams. DO NOT
draw a vacuum on the vessel. A hydrostatic test consists of filling the separator with
water and inspecting for leakage after it is given time to sit, typically four hours.
4. Equipment to lift the separator shall be of adequate size to lift and lower the separator
without dragging or dropping to avoid possible damage to the separator.
5. Separator shall be carefully placed in the area of its final location. If used, cables or
chains must be of adequate length (not less than 45° included angle) attached to the lifting
lugs provided. A spreader bar should be used where necessary. UNDER NO
CIRCUMSTANCES USE CHAINS OR SLINGS AROUND THE SEPARATOR.
6. If electrical accessories are included with the separator, make temporary connections to
verify operation before items are installed.
7. Separator shall be filled with clean water as soon as possible after placement of separator
in its final location.
8. All vent openings must be piped in accordance with governing codes from each
connection to atmospheric vent outlet. Compartment vent lines must be vented to prevent
buildup of hazardous gasses and the outlet must be vented separately to prevent siphoning
and to keep vented gas out of the effluent system.
9. Customer must provide flame an-esters where required by governing codes or conditions
for safety.
Section 3.G—Rev 6/02— 1/1
