rFA. ASTE DIVERSION ANALYSIS
DISCUSSION OF TYPES OF SOLID AND HAZARDOUS WASTE THAT WILL BE DIVERTED FROM
DISPOSAL BY RECYCLING METHODS.
The main items of domestic waste which may be recycled will consist of paper(primarily
newspapers and letter size), glass and aluminum. Presently, these materials can be placed in
recycling bins and taken to a recycling center in Lathrop. In addition, some domestic products
such as paint cans, household pesticide spray cans, etc. may be taken to the County Public Works
Department on recycling days which are published in the Stockton Record or by the
Environmental Health Department. Lawn, garden and compostable food waste can be
composted. Since the mobile home and office do not have garbage disposals, composting will
reduce food waste that would go to the dumpster.
The hazardous materials listed above are returned to the companies supplying the new products.
For example, when the oil is changed on the tractors, used oil is taken to the business that sells
new oil and accepts old oil (e.g., Kragen's). Used oil filters are also taken to these types of
businesses. Oil for pickup trucks is changed in town at a"quick-lube" facility. Soaps come in
containers that can be recycled.
B. DISCUSSION OF PROCESSES THAT WILL BE USED THAT REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF WASTE
THAT WOULD NORMALLY BE GENERATED.
Recycling is the primary process by which the amount of domestic and commercial wastes are
reduced. From a commercial standpoint, the recycling of all types of containers and fluids such
as used oil and antifreeze, has been an economically driven procedure by the various suppliers in
an effort to obtain and keep customers.
C. ESTIMATION OF THE ANNUAL QUANTITY OF SOLID AND HAZARDOUS WASTE THAT WILL
BE DIVERTED,PER WASTE TYPE IDENTIFIED IN SECTION II,A&B ABOVE.
An estimation of the annual quantity of solid and hazardous waste that will be diverted for
recycling from both domestic and commercial sources are approximately 25% for domestic and
95%for commercial.
D. DISCUSSION OF MARKET AVAILABILITY FOR DIVERTED MATERIALS.
As referenced above, recycling materials and containers is an economically driven procedure for
the suppliers of the various commercial materials. However, the two dominant waste materials
that are generated on-site are animal manures and animal carcasses. Manure has a significant
economic value and is sold to spreader companies, although there is the option of applying it to
adjacent cropland owned by Mr. Stagno. Animal carcasses also have economic value and are
picked up on a daily basis by the rendering (tallow)plant. The rendering facility generates
various by-products from the carcasses and other animal parts. Diversion of these materials has
been detailed in our Manure Management Plan for this project, which has been submitted to the
San Joaquin County Environmental Health Department.
Na(ky Ag Research
