• Mr.Harlin Knoll
Previous Soil Investigation
Ms. Langum collected two soil samples at a depth of 6-inches below grade surface (bgs) and
submitted the samples to CLS Laboratory located at 3249 Fitzgerald Rd, Rancho Cordova, CA
95742 (ELAP #1233) for analysis. The samples were analyzed for total petroleum hydrocarbons
as diesel and as motor oil (TPHd and TPHmo, respectively). TPHmo was detected at
concentrations of 110 and 210 milligrams per kilogram (mg/Kg) near the gas meter as shown in
Figure 2.
Soil Boring and Sample Collection
On December 13, 2010, a Ground Zero technician measured and staked five sample points at
approximately eight-foot intervals. At each sample point, the technician scraped away the 2- to
3-inches of the coarse sand cover to expose native soil and then using a hand auger advanced 6-
inches. The technician then collected a 6-inch soil sample using a slide hammer sampling tool.
This procedure was repeated at 12-inch intervals to a total depth of 3 feet bgs at each sample
point. Soil samples were submitted to subjective analysis for contamination using a photo-
ionization detector (PID) and the results are shown on Figure 2. Based on the results of the PID
readings five soil samples were selected to be sent to a certified state laboratory for analysis.
The samples were collected in brass tubes, sealed with Teflon tape, capped, uniquely identified,
stored in an ice chest refrigerated to a temperature of approximately 4°C, and delivered under
chain of custody protocol to Argon Laboratories (ELAP #2359) of Ceres, California (Argon) for
analysis.
RESULTS OF INVESTIGATION
Subsurface Lithology
The upper 3 feet of soil is predominately a fine grain sandy-silt overlain with 2- to 3-inches of
coarse grain sand. There were no signs of soil staining visible to the sampling technician. There
were no notable odors at any sampling point or sampling depth.
Soil Analytical Results
Five soil samples were selected and were submitted to Argon for analysis. The samples from the
upper two feet were analyzed for TPHmo using EPA method 8015M. The remaining soil samples
were analyzed for total petroleum hydrocarbons as gasoline(TPHg),TPHd, and TPHmo using EPA
method 8015M; for benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes (BTEX) by EPA method 8021B;
and for ethylene glycol and diethylene glycol by EPA method 8015M. The results are summarized
below and the laboratory reports and chain of custody documentation are included in Attachment B.
• Sample 1C3' — TPHg, TPHd, TPHmo, BTEX constituents, ethylene glycol, and diethylene
glycol were not reported above laboratory detection limits.
• Sample 3C3' — TPHg, TPHd, TPHmo, BTEX constituents, ethylene glycol, and diethylene
glycol were not reported above laboratory detection limits.
G:IGROUNDZEILangum EscalonlReporWSoil Removal Workplan.doc
