Box 2009
Stockton, California 95201
RE:
Work Plan
Evaluation of Emissions and Airborne Concentrations of Benzene
McDowell & Davis Towing, 1360 Escalon Avenue, Escalon, California
M.J. Kloberdanz & Associates will contract with Block Environmental Services (BES) to
evaluate airborne concentrations of Benzene in the building at McDowell & Davis
Towing. Previous risk assessment modeling of the fuel release at McDowell & Davis
Towing had concluded that the potential for harmful Benzene exposures may be present
in the indoor air.
INDOOR BENZENE DETERMINATION
Block Environmental Services(BES)will collect an indoor air sample in the building and
analyze the sample for benzene. The indoor sample will be compared to an ambient
outside reference sample collected from an area removed from the area of contamination.
Samples will be collected at a height of 4 feet, which simulates the breathing zone of an
adult. A 6-liter Stainless Steel Summa canister will be used to collect the air sample,
which will be analyzed by EPA Method TO-3. The air samples will be collected at a time
when activities at the facility and office do not involve the use of gasoline or other
petroleum products,which may contain benzene.
EMISSION ISOLATION FLUX CHAMBER SAMPLING
Volatile organic chemicals (VOCs) emitted from the soil surfaces can potentially be
inhaled or become trapped in confined spaces (e.g., basements, indoor rooms). Emission
isolation flux chamber sampling is an EPA method for measuring volatile soil gas
emissions (flux) from contaminated soil and groundwater sources (EPA 1990). Flux is a
