III. NITRATE LOADING STUDY FINDINGS
The Nitrate Loading Study findings will be discussed in the following sequential categories:
1.) Projected wastewater flow volumes from the Temple Restrooms and Kitchen, post expansion.
2.) Anticipated wastewater characteristics.
3.) Nitrate loading to the groundwater underlying the mound system disposal area.
4.) Mound System Design Criteria and Parameters.
5.) Conclusions and Recommendations Section.
A. WASTEWATER FLOW PROJECTIONS AND CHARACTERISTICS
WASTEWATER FLOW VOLUME PROJECTIONS
A number of variables are involved in estimating wastewater Average Daily Flow(ADF)volumes from the
Sikh Temple expansion. Wastewater flow volume projections for facilities in unsewered areas of San
Joaquin County have been historically and typically calculated under one or more of the following
guidelines:
1. Data published in the San Joaquin County Sewage Standards.
2. Anticipated total occupant load.
3. Number of bathroom fixtures for a facility, leading to calculated bathroom use per capita.
4. Number of parking spaces.
5. Historical wastewater flow data from the existing or comparable facility.
The following list of flow projection determinations describe the rationale for arriving at the average daily
effluent flow volumes for the Sikh Temple expansion:
1. The San Joaquin County Sewage Standards ass' 10 per person for a House of Worship
with a Kitchen, and 5 gallons per person for a House of Worship without a kitchen. Although this
standard is used occasionally for projects of much smaller capacities, these wastewater flows are
based upon archaic toilet flows of 5 gallons per flush and sink faucets of much higher flows than
contemporary fixtures. Additionally, the Sewage Standards assign 150 gr Ions per toilet fixture/day_
(Parishioner/Staff use),which is typically taken to incorporate Is,sinks and drinking
fountains.Again, this volume is based on archaic plumbing fix w high flow volumes.
2. The occupant load according to the Site Plans is anticipated to 914.
3. The total number of fixtures for the Temple expansion are in at the referenced Expansion
Site Plans.
4. The total number of parking spaces after expansion is proposed t1! 310-Phree people occupying
each vehicle leads to the approximate total occupant load.
The second criteria referenced above will be used to formulate an ADF from the Sikh Temple:
Given the occupant load is,9 maximum of 914 people, which will occur only on Sundays, each person is
assigned 1.5 gallons for toilet use,0.5 gallons for hand washing and 0.6 gallons for water used in the
kitchen(s),which is conservative use. Thisbfmgs the total ADF to 2,400 gpd, which corresponds with
mound systeffi design parameters. Each of the four cells within the mound is designed to manage 600 gpd,
for a total ADF'of 2,400 gpd.
7
