ANTICIPATED WASTEWATER CHARACTERISTICS
The characteristics of the wastewater flow will be predominately blackwater, and smaller volumes of gray
water from dishwashing. Since most dishes and utensils will be disposable, there will be no dishwasher and
water use for dishwashing will be limited. Any remaining dishwashing will be done by hand. Food
preparation will occur in the existing Assembly Hall kitchen and the future Langar tc It!s
imperative that a!!food and food by-product wastes are handled as solid wastes nd not c sposed of
into the septic system. Fats, oils and grease(FOG)are also included in this ca ory. FO should be
handled as a solid waste in containers such as 55 gallon drums and a recycling company should be under
contract to transport it of-sits By keeping food and food by-products out of the septic system, this will
prevent concentrated organic loading and prolong the lifespan of the mound system. Kitchen sinks must not
contain a garbage disposal. All fixtures(faucets, toilets, urinals)mustbe of lowest flows available.
Faucets should be spring-loaded. A water s f3ener must not be installed on theotnestic water supply line
since the sodium liberated could deflocculat native clay soils and..collapse the soil structure.
Additional-wastewater constituents may consist of similar type liquids to the system. It is also imperative
that no industrial or commercial chemicals, solvents, excessive cleaners, etc.are introduced into the septic
system,as well as other items such as sanitary napkins, paper other than toilet paper, cloth, plastic, etc.
Total Soluble Solids(TSS)originating from organics can create and enhance biomat formation between the
native soil and effluent interface, thus restricting infiltration. The biomat, also referred to as a`clogging
mat,"is a biological, slimy substance which forms on the soil-effluent interface over time. This mat is
composed mostly of aerobic and anaerobic bacteria and bacterial products consisting of polyura rides and
polysaccharides. The biomat does have one beneficial property of removing approximately 16%of the
nitrogen from the effluent. This figure has been used in the nitrate loading calculations.
Total Nitrogen is the summation of ammonia-nitrogen(NH4)and organic nitrogen(proteins, amino acids,
enzymes). Since the septic tank is predominately anaerobic, nitrogen cannot exist in its oxidized state as
nitrate for any length of time, and if it does,it is quickly reduced to NO or NO,. If nitrate existed in the tank
effluent, this would also be added to ammonium and organic nitrogen to arrive at Total Nitrogen.
To quantify the anticipated nitrogen concentration for use in the nitrate loading calculations for the Temple
expansion project,septic tank effluent sample test results were obtained from three other Houses of Worship ;
in San Joaquin County. These analytical test results were averaged to provide the concentrations found in
Table 3, Column 2,below.
In addition, septic tank effluent concentrations from various researchers that have been published in Small
and Decentralized Wastewater Management Systems,by Crites and Tchobanoglous are found in Columns 3
and 4. These two columns illustrate the effect effluent filtration has on certain constituents of the effluent,
particularly BOD and TSS. Consequently, filters will be installed in all septic tanks for this project.
Column 5 illustrates septic tank effluent concentrations for the constituents listed that have been determined
by the U.S.E.P.A.
8
