Puccinelli Residence
Page No. 3
Summer or Fall Construction
The building pad should be cleared of all weeds and vegetation. Once the
building pad is cleared, the surface of the pad should be scarified to a depth of 6
inches and recompacted to dry densities in excess of 90 percent of the maximum dry
density obtainable in the ASTM D1557 Compaction Test. It might be necessary to
manipulate the soil to either dry it out or add moisture so that the proper amount
of moisture exists in order to obtain the required densities. Once the surface soils
have been scarified and recompacted, any fill that may be required should be placed
and compacted at a minimum 90 percent relative compaction. The scarification,
recompaction, and filling operations should extend a minimum of 5 feet beyond the
building pad. On site soils may be used for fill.
If grading is accomplished as specified, then the foundations for the proposed
construction can consist of conventional spread footings and slab-on-grade. Footings should
be carried to a minimum depth of 18 inches below finished grade. These foundations can
be loaded to bearing capacities not to exceed 1500 pounds per square foot total load.
Bearing capacities can be increased 1/3 for seismic and wind loads. Minimum width of
footings should be established as 12 inches. If a higher bearing capacity is desired or if
construction is taking place in the winter or spring (soft surface soils), footing depths may
extend through the surface silty soil and bear on the cemented soils. A summary of the
required depth of footings at each of the test pits is presented next:
Test Pit # Required Footing, Depth, inches
1 30
2 24
3 22
Footings that bear on the cemented soils may be loaded to bearing capacities not to
exceed 3000 pounds per square foot total load. This bearing capacity may also be increased
1/3 for seismic and wind loads.
Regardless of the depth, footings should be continuously reinforced with a minimum
of 1 - #4 bar top and bottom (total of 2 bars). The floor slab should be attached to the
footings by #4 dowels spaced at 36 inch centers. Dowels should extend into the slab a
minimum of 24 inches. The floor slab should be reinforced with either #3 bars at 24 inch
centers each way or 6x6xl.4xl.4 wire mesh. It is recommended that the footing excavations
p
