Puccinelli Residence
Page No. 4
be observed by our office to verify that the soils encountered are those which were
anticipated and designed for.
A minimum of 4 inches of clean gravel should be placed beneath the slab-on-grade.
This gravel should be well graded between a maximum size of 1 inch and a minimum size
of 1/4 inch with zero percent passing the No. 4 sieve. Where passage of moisture through
the slab would be detrimental, an impervious vapor barrier should be provided such as 6 mil
visqueen or equivalent. Two inches of sand should be placed over the visqueen to protect
it during construction and to aid in curing the concrete.
PERCOLATION TEST
A shallow test hole was excavated in the area of the proposed leach field (see the
attached location map) and cemented soils were encountered at a depth of 2.0 feet. It was
apparent that these cemented soils would be very slow to percolate, so a 24 foot deep by
6 inch diameter test hole was drilled in order to perform a deep pit percolation test. The
soil profile of the deep pit percolation test hole .was logged by a civil engineer. A
description of each soil encountered is attached as Log of Deep Pit Percolation Test Hole.
Fairly clean sand was encountered in the test hole from a depth of 20 feet to 24 feet.
Two inches of gravel was placed in clic hottont of the; test hole Ill 11 (1cplh of 24 feet.
A 4 inch diameter perl.oralcd pipe was Own placed in the ho11e ,111(1 I)ackfilled wish gl;lvel.
The test hole was filled with water 24 hours prior to running the percolation test. The last
half hour of the test readings were witnessed by a county health official and the test data
obtained is attached. The percolation rate has been adjusted to account for the gravel and
pipe backfill. Calculations for adjustments are on the test data sheet.
A summary of the test results is presented next:
Diameter of Depth of
Test No. Hole Hole (ft.)
