A groundwater "'grab"' sample was collected
with a steel bailer when groundwater was encountered at 96.4 feet bgs.
Sixteen (6) of forty-five (45) soil samples collected, were sealed, labeled,
and placed in an ice chest at a temperature of four (4) degrees Celsius, and
submitted 4o ¢a State-Certified laboratory, sander a proper Chain-of-Custody,
to be analyzed for total petroleum hydrocarbons as gasoline (TPH-g) using
EPA Method 8015 modified, for Benzene, Toluene, Ethylbenzene, and
Xylenes (BTEX) using EPA Method 8020, and for MTBE. Soil samples were
also analyzed for gasoline oxygenates by EPA Method 8260.
10 2.2 Pvlae4hod QJ Drilllnz and sampftz a g®Bl
Vhe bor5ngs were exccavwed with an eighg (8) inch hollow-stem auger drill,
with 5-foot long sections and soil samples were collected with a two (2) inch
inner diameter, five (5) foot long, split spoon sampler at approximate five (5)
foot vertical intervals depending upon the soil stratigraphy and
contaminants encountered. The samples were obtained by the compressive
force of a 140 Ib hammer dropped from a height of 18 inches. The soil
samples were extruded into six (6)-inch long steel or brass sample liners. The
liners, with soil, were placed inside a plastic Zip-Loc bag and a small volume
of soil at the end of the sample was disturbed to allow the volatiles to
accumulate in the bag for approximately two to five minutes. A properly
calibrated photo ionization detector (PID) was used to screen the soil
samples, inside each bag, for the presence of gasoline constituents. The soil
samples with the highest readings were selected for analysis. Every six inch
soil sample recovered was screened with the PID (See Appendix A for Soil
Boring dogs).
Each collected soil sample was covered at each end of the cylinder with
Teflon tape, plastic end caps, and sealed with "duct tape" to adhere the caps
to the liners at each end, to hermetically seal the samples. The soil samples
• were labeled with an ink field marker as to the depth and location the
sample was collected, the sample number, and the project name and
