Spreckels Sugar Tracy, California JOB 96017
Because the last test result is inconsistent with the previous, Well B
will be tested again. i
All of the detected constituents are related to gasoline, for which
there is a closer release to account for their presence. There is no
indication from the tests that Bunker C is present . Bunker C fuel oil
is non-hazardous, not soluble in groundwater, contains no carcinogenic
components, and has extremely limited mobility in soil .
The vault is located between the railroad tracks and the molasses
tank. It is not possible to put a drill rig downgradient of the
vault .
In order to achieve a determination that no further action is
required, the following items will be evaluated.
(1) There should be a monitoring well in the downgradient direction in
the shallow groundwater which shows no significant concentrations of
Bunker C hydrocarbon constituents . Well B will be used for that
purpose . An additional sample will be tested specifically for Bunker
C components . This will be accomplished by giving the certified
laboratory a sample of Bunker C oil to use as the calibration standard
for the Total Petroleum Hydrocarbon test.
(2) There should be an additional soil boring to establish the point
at which Bunker C is no longer present in the soil . Based upon my
experience with Bunker C oil, that distance is 30 feet . A test hole
would therefore be hand augered at a distance of 30 feet from the
vault in the downgradient direction, as shown on Figure 2 . During the
hand augering, undisturbed soil samples would be taken at 51 , 10 ' , and
15 ' deep . The soil samples would be submitted to a certified
laboratory for the Total Petroleum Hydrocarbon test using Bunker C as
the calibration standard. In the event that it was in the zone of
impacted soil, we would move out 30 more feet and redrill . The soil
boring would be logged by a licensed geotechnical engineer .
(3 ) At the time the monitoring well was sampled, the groundwater
elevation at all the wells would be established. The groundwater
contour map would be prepared. I am licensed to perform surveys in
the State of California.
(4) The well would be purged of at least 5 well volumes before
sampling. A Teflon bailer would be used to sample . The person would
be a Class A Title 22 sampler. The samples would be placed in bottles
provided by the testing laboratory. The samples would be kept in an
ice chest with blue ice for delivery to the certified laboratory in 24
hours . Chain of custody would be established. .
I
2
