Project Description— Report of Composting Site Information
Tracy Material Recovery Facility and Transfer Station
30703 S. MacArthur Drive, Tracy, California 95377
performance and to help analyze the efficiency of the composting process. A note
will be made when samples are taken. Any noticeable odors from of the venting
gases will be noted.
Procedures for taking temperatures
• Temperature probes --2 feet long, with a dial on one end and a thermocouple
on the other will be used for taking temperatures. The probe will be inserted
into the bag at points, which will be recorded for subsequent readings.
• Depths at which the temperatures will be taken as discussed above.
• Temperatures will be taken at the same time each day to aid in eliminating
the variable of the blower being on one time and not the next.
• The same person taking the temperatures using the same technique each
time will be utilized whenever possible to further aid in eliminating variables.
• Free Water
Free water (excessive moisture) found in the bag has been substantially decreased
with the addition of a second blower that dries up the free liquids. Should there be
leakage from the bags, processed green material or wood chips will be placed on
the liquids to absorb the liquids into the voids of the processed material, which is
then collected and added back into the next CTI bag that is being filled.
• Compost maturity and further pathogen reduction overview
The operator will use declining temperatures of a compost mass as a good indicator
of the maturity of composting material in each CTI bag.
• Each bag will be allowed to compost for approximately 8-16 weeks.
• Bags will be opened and material put into elongated windrows as fully
explained in the Technology Application Section 1, page 29, for another 2 to 6
weeks.
• Removal of unfinished compost from a bag will be accomplished with a front-
end loader after the bag has been sliced along the lower portion of each side
and peeled back. The composted material will be removed from between and
over the aeration piping until the pipe is free to be pulled to the next use area.
The bag will be cut into manageable sections and rolled or folded for storage
until it is-recycled with other film plastics.
• Screening
The composted material is then screened over a period of 60 days to 1-inch screen.
The overs are considered trash and are disposed of. The one inch unders are cured
for up to another 60 days, where the product is screen to 5/16 minus for sale.
• Storing of finished compost
Following the screening process, the finished compost material will be moved
directly to a stockpile location for wholesale and retail sales for up to 180 days where
there is up to 18,500 cubic yards of storage.
Edgar&Associates,Inc. 42 Tracy Compost Fac ProjDescO42390
