ATTACHMENT A
Mokelumne River Fish Facility Improvements
Project Description
The Mokelumne River Fish Hatchery Project will renovate and expand the administration
building and the production capacity of the hatchery. These facilities were constructed in 1964,
modified over the last 30 years, and now require upgrading to meet current CDFG production
goals and hatchery management practices.
The proposed work includes demolition of most existing structures over a 4 acre site which were
designed around a spawning channel application and have deteriorated after 30 years of intensive
use. The new facility will be designed around the existing adult holding pond/egg take operation
which was installed in 1994. A new 5,900 square foot combined administration, freezer and
shop building is proposed to house up to nine CDFG hatchery staff. The proposed improvements
are estimated to have a construction value of$9.5 million, excluding design and construction
management services.
Major features of the proposed plan can be seen in the attached site plan. Fish grow-out takes
place in 60 raceways, arranged three per series, that are enclosed with a bird exclosure for
predator control. Improvements to the water system include packed column aerators at the head
end of each series, modifications to the existing potassium permanganate injection and sand
filtration systems, hookups for a temporary chiller system, and an aeration tower for the hatchery
building water supply. An existing well will be developed to supply up to 400 g p.m. ofground
water for domestic water supply to the new administration building and to supplement the
hatchery building supply. An area will be provided for temporary compressed oxygen that may
be used during drought conditions when dissolved oxygen levels are low in the hatchery water
supply. The existing earthen channels and vegetation will be used to treat wastewater from
raceway cleaning, similar to the existing raceway wastewater treatment system. The new
administration, freezer and shop building will include floor and window coverings and will have
an area to receive visitors, including bathrooms. Two chemical storage buildings will hold
herbicides and flammable materials. The existing hatchery building and adult holding ponds that
were completed in 1994 will be modified to improve the spawning area and fish handling in the
holding ponds. New employee parking will be integrated into the site plan. The existing visitor
parking lot will remain in its existing conditign. All new facilities will meet State of California
Title 24 requirements for the disabled.
Materials Produced Stored or Used
Materials Produced: The facility will produce fingerling and smolt steelhead and salmon that are
released into the lower Mokelumne River system and into the San Francisco Bay.
Materials Stored& Used: The facility will store and use fish food, petroleum products,
herbicides, compressed oxygen, and fish culture chemicals including formaldehyde. An exisitng
1,000 gallon above-ground fuel storage tank contains diesel fuel and gasoline for vehicle use.
Separate chemical storage buildings will store motor and lubricating oils, 50 gallons of
herbicides (Round-up-and Rodeo), and 110 gallons of formaldehyde.
W\W"RO=SA=O
