IV. SITE RECONNAISSANCE AND INTERVIEWS
The following site specific information was obtained from direct observations and an int7Aprnil
v Mr. and Mrs. Camera on March 17, 2005. The date of the final inspection of the propert
2005.The cropla//d portion of the property is currently planted in grain and ngwly planted walnut
trees. There are-wee domestic wells and two irrigation wells on therop perry.. The domestic well that
serves the on-site residence in located near the southwest corner of the metal shop building. This well
ears to have o w A septic system serves the single family residential
structure anda septic system served the aforementioned labor camp.
The entire acreage was walked and surveyed for evidence which may suggest surface and/or
subsurface contamination: No hazardous materials were noted on the property, other than de minimus
materials. This included eight empty barrels and approximately 15 tires. Several tires also exist in the
labor camp building. No evidence of drug manufacturing or the dumping of drug-related chemicals
was observed in the metal building, on any of the roads or open areas, and/or on acreage surrounding
the property.
i/Non-hazardous containers were observed surrounding the metal building. Evidence of solid waste
disposal was also noted. Other non-hazardous solids wastes noted were twine plastic wood, metal,
concrete wire two old truck batteries along with an old truck and trailer. Two bum barrels are
located behind the metal shop building. Old farm implements, an old truck and an old car also exist
near the metal shop building, the residential structure, and the defunct labor camp.
/,/The site was inspected for environmental concerns originating from discolored,disturbed/subsided soils,
stressed vegetation or unusual/noxious odors. None of these environmental indicators were observed,
although the on-site soils were wet from recent, heavy rains that may have disguised surface soil staining.
As evidenced by the attached photographs,no hazardous materials are stored on-site and there was no
indication or observations of spills or other items associated with hazardous materials.
An important concern associated with the environmental assessment of open properties is the issue of
buried pesticide containers or discarded items. It was an occasional practice to dispose of containers or
discarded items by this method many years ago. To detect these types of underground artifacts is
difficult even with the use of ground penetrating radar or other types of non-intrusive, subsurface
analyses. The examined land surface did not exhibit visual indicators for buried containers such as
surfacing of product residue, soil mounding, or localized soil depressions. The Environmental
QKggj2LjAairebAjLcates that no underground containers or discarded items were buried on the property.
It is usually after a contaminant plume has impacted a domestic well that buried artifacts are discovered.
If buried items,or other types of subsurface environmental concerns are discovered at any time in the
future, the San Joaquin County Environmental Health Department must be contacted immediately.
Page -4-
Chesney Consulting
