Box 248
St. Helena, CA 94574
CONDITIONAL APPROVAL OF GROUNDWATER MONITORING WORKPLAN, SUTTER
HOME WINERY,LODI, SAN JOA QUIN COUNTY
I have reviewed the "Monitoring Well Installation and Quarterly Groundwater Monitoring Workplan,
Sutter Home Winery, " prepared by Condor Earth Technologies, Inc., dated 14 November 2001. The
plan was prepared in response to a 4 October 2001 Regional Board Order for Technical Reports. After
reviewing the workplan, I have the following comments:
• While drilling the wells, please collect soil samples at a minimum of five-foot intervals for lithologic
description.
• Based on the information on flow direction presented in the workplan, the well locations are
generally acceptable with the following comments:
+ The well located at the existing wastewater storage ponds is approximately.125 feet west of the
ponds it will monitor. Please move the monitoring well closer to the ponds. Location within 50
{ feet of the ponds is acceptable.
+ The well located at the southwest corner of the property boundary may not monitor the land
application area based on the cropping plan diagram contained in Section 8 of the RWD. Please ,
consider locating the well north of the proposed location.
• Please add an additional well that will monitor the groundwater downgradient of the stormwater
pond. Because of the wastewater/stormwater diversion valve, which could allow wastewater to
be incorrectly discharged to the stormwater pond, monitoring groundwater quality downgradient,
of the stormwater pond and upgradient of land application areas is required. (As presently
proposed, the well located at the southwest corner of the property would likely monitor
downgradient of both the stormwater pond and the land application area).
- • Section 13.10.8 of the San Joaquin County Environmental Health Department (SJCEHD) Well
Standards recommends surging the filter pack prior to installation of the transition seal. If borehole
conditions allow, please perform that task.
L + Groundwater monitoring requirements have not yet been formalized in Waste Discharge
[ Requirements (WDRs); however, wineries typically are required to monitor the following parameters
.
