Frimpa:cted
RD PUBLIC ENVIRONMENTAL RECORD SOURCES
te and Federal environmental records were reviewed for sites which may have
e subject property. The databases accessed did not indicate a problem or potential
problem with the subject site. Potential environmental impact from other facilities, whether
commercial and/or residential within a one mile proximity to the subject site is unknown at this
time. It is conceivable that there may be groundwater impact at present or in the future,
particularly from nitrate.
Mr. and Mrs. Slikker purchased the subject property in 1945. The prior owner(s) is unknown.
Since the operation and ownership of the subject property is well documented for the past fifty
years, previous ownerships were not investigated.
There are two primary sources of information which document and define past land use, although
they are sometimes difficult to interpret. The fust is the use of aerial photographs. Aerial
photographs of the subject area in the 1970's from USDA Soil Maps illustrate the structures that
are currently in the northwest portion of the property, and the farmed area in the remaining
portion of the property. The second source of information can be found on USGS maps. A 1978
USGS quadrangle map for this area indicates the Slikker residence and the referenced barn in the
northwest corner of the property, and no other buildings. There has been no photo revision of
this USGS map since 1978.
INFORMATION FROM SITE RECONNAISSANCE AND INTERVIEWS
The following information was obtained visually and/or through an interview with Mrs. Slikker on
February 8, 2000: The subject property contains no underground or above ground storage tanks
(USTs/ASTs), other than a propane tank used for hearing and cooking. The ranch never had a
diesel/gas UST.
There is an on-site, conventional septic system with a tank and leachfield area that serves the
Slikker residence on proposed Parcel 1. The subject area is well known for its sandy soil;
therefore, the leachfield consists of leachlines only, with no sumps or seepage pits. There were
two empty drums observed next to the barn which did not appear to contain hazardous materials.
The farming operations are conducted by Mr. Gary Winters, a competent and conscientious
farmer who leases the property from Mrs. Slikker. Agrichemical applications are done by Mr.
Winters, or material is applied by custom applicators. Therefore, there is assurance that material
has been applied correctly and accurately to its intended target without (or minimal) drift. There
is a very slight possibility of minute volumes of pesticide drift originating from the surrounding
acreage during aerial and/or ground applications. Any agrichemical mixing is done off-site. All
containers are returned to the dealer and bags, if any, are burned when appropriate and legal.
2
Valfey Ag Research
