7
compaction test to assess the breakdown effect of glass particles in the material
gradation.
water-soluble sulfate, laboratory resistivity, and pH tests on soil samples
were performed to assess corrosion potential in concrete and metals. The volume
change characteristics of the foundation materials were investigated by
incrementally-loaded consolidation tests. Compressibility of the laboratory-
saturated soil was assessed on selected, relatively undisturbed samples of near
surface soils and clay strata.
The shear strength characteristics of the upper native materials were
assessed by performing direct shear tests. Triaxial, unconsolidated undrained
and miniature vane strength tests, as well as torvane and pocket penetrometer
strength estimates, were conducted on deeper samples of clay.
The shear strength characteristics of potential fill material composed of
reworked native soil blended with glass were assessed with a consolidated-
undrained triaxial compression test with pore water pressure measurements. The
test sample was remolded to about 90 percent of the maximum dry density evaluated
by ASTM D 1557 standard test.
The following tabulation presents the types and numbers of tests performed,
and the means used in presenting the test results.
Number
Type of Test of Tests Presentation
Water Content 53 Plotted on boring logs and tabu-
lated on Summary of Test Results.
Total and Dry Unit Weights 51 Plotted on boring logs and tabu-
lated on Summary of Test Results.
Liquid and Plastic Limits 19 Plotted on boring logs and tabu-
lated on Summary of Test Results.
Percent Passing the No. 200 Sieve 37 Tabulated on boring logs and
Summary of Test Results.
Sieve Analyses 21 Presented on grain size curves, Plates
14 through 23.
Consolidation Tests 4 Presented on Plates 24 through 27.
pH, Sulfate, Resistivity 2 Tabulated on Summary of Test Results.
Compaction (ASTM D 1557) 2 Presented on Plates 28 and 29.
R Value 1 Tabulated on Summary of Test
Results.
Miniature Vane 7 Plotted on boring logs and tabu-
lated on Summary of Test Results.
Direct Shear, Multi-Stage 3 Presented on Plates 30 through 32.
1144A/CC-7 :: McClelland
