40
Grading must meet the governing agencies requirements for fill compaction
and placement, cut and fill slopes, and surface preparation. Quality control of
as-compacted density should be performed. Based on the opinion of the Soils
Engineer in the field, laboratory compaction tests should be performed in the
field during construction quality control when material grain-size or plasticity
characteristics change or are suspected to be different.
Fill Reinforcement. As indicated earlier in the report, the bearing capa-
city of the fill can be enhanced and the differential settlements reduced by
placing soil reinforcing at 6-inch vertical intervals in the fill as it is being
compacted. The reinforcing should extend to at least 10 feet beyond the
foundations in all directions. Minimum thickness of the reinforced section that
is required to increase the allowable bearing pressures are discussed in the
Foundation Recommendations for the various project components.
Trench Backfill. On-site materials may be used for backfilling trenches.
Compaction by flooding and jetting should not be allowed for backfill materials
comprised of on-site soils. Placement and compaction of these backfill materials
should comply with compaction criteria and control as recommended in the
Compaction Requirements section of this report.
If well graded sands are imported, these materials may be compacted by
flooding and jetting provided the sand equivalent for the material is greater
than 40.
Excavations and Trenches
We expect excavations for formed foundations and shallow utilities to be
made using open-cut procedures. Temporary or permanent excavations should be no
steeper than 1-vertical to 2-horizontal at this site, unless the excavations are
shored in conformance to local and/or OSHA standards.
The bases of foundation excavations should be protected against any dis-
turbance by construction activity. The bases of large excavations should be
proof-rolled with a heavy roller. Smaller excavations should be inspected and
compacted as specified prior to foundation construction. Any soft spots or other
unsuitable material should be removed and replaced with structural fill. Drain-
age should be established away from excavations in order to reduce the inflow of
rainwater and other surface runoff.
McClelland
1144A/CC-40 ',►
