SAFETY INFO - Page 2
CANHYDROUS AMMONIA HOSE INSPECTIONS
procedure or to infer that hoses that have been inspected will never
burst. Union Chemicals Division of Union oil Company accepts no responsibility
for any accidents that might occur from failure of any hose tested in
this manner.
FIELD INSPECTION
It is suggested the operator visually inspect the hose each time it is
used. Any physical defect or change should be reported to the person
responsible for NH3 equipment safety.
YARD INSPECTION
At the beginning of each fertilizer season and at regular intervals
thereafter, a thorough manual hose inspection should be made by a qualified
person. If the qualified inspector is not satisfied that the hose tested
manually is 100% satisfactory, he may recommend hydrostatic testing for
hose with stainless steel braid. Do not hydrostat hose with nonmetallic
braid.
SHOP INSPECTION
` To manually inspect a hose assembly, remove all pressure, thoroughly
clean the exterior surface and lay out the hose full length on a clean
dry work surface. Inspect the entire surface from end to end for any
defects. Roll the hose as required to insure that all areas are fully
observed. Any defects shall be more carefully inspected and hoses that
require repair shall be removed from service or repaired before use. Hoses
not repairable shall be discarded. See adenda for manual testing.
Hose Assembly Defects
Any cuts, nicks and abrasions of a hose cover should be inspected to deter—
mine if the reinforcement braid has been damaged in any way. Damage to the
braid will weaken the hose. Any hose showing the braid or having damage to
the braid must be repaired or replaced.
Kinks, bulges, flat spots and exposure of braid indicates . weakness. Hoses
with these weaknesses should not be used.
ABRASION
Light abrasion of the outer cover may be acceptable. The cover protects the
braid from abrasion, chemical attack and weathering. If these properties are
not weakened, the hose braid is not weakened.
COUPLING DEFECTS
Corrosion, dents or cracking of the coupling is cause for hose rejection.
The appearance of any slippage requires immediate repair. If the hose tests
okay on all other points, the couplings may be replaced with new couplings
and the hose returned to service. Hoses with leaks must be repaired or
