EPA staff evaluated the subsurface geology of the
proposed injection area by analyzing seismic data, well
logs, well history reports, published maps, cross
sections and reports.
2 . PRETREATMENT PRIOR TO INJECTION
The wastewater generated by the cogeneration facility
consists of: boiler feedwater treatment chemicals,
cooling water treatment chemicals, and waste from
demineralization. These three sources are combined and
neutralized prior to injection.
Wastewater from the Facility will be treated to remove
solids from the waste stream. Solids removal will be
accomplished by passing the waste stream through a system
of multi-media and polishing filters. The multi-media
and polishing filters will have redundant units installed
to insure continuous operation in the event of equipment
failure. Back flush from the filters will be collected
in a sludge/surge tank. Under normal operating
conditions, the total suspended solids (TSS) content of
the wastewater at the injection point will be 10 ppm or
less. If suspended solids content exceeds normal
operating parameters, the wastewater will be recycled
through the filtering equipment. The filtered wastewater
will be stored in holding tanks prior to injection. The
waste stream will be regularly sampled and analyzed for
TSS at a point immediately preceding the injection well .
Solids which will be collected in the sludge/surge tank
will be tested for hazardous materials and disposed of
according to State and Federal regulations.
3 . TDS LEVELS OF FORMATION FLUID
A TDS value for the formation water from the Primary
Injection Formation at the proposed well site is not
available at this time. There is a possibility that the
TDS values in this zone will be less than 10, 000 ppm
making it a USDW. In the event that the Primary
Injection Zone is unsuitable, the Alternate Injection
Zone is expected to have salinities of approximately
25, 000 ppm.
4 . NATURE OF INJECTION FLUID
The injection fluid consists of: boiler treatment
chemicals, cooling tower treatment chemicals, and waste
from demineralization.
6
