A. WAS FLOW PROJECTIONS AND CHARACTERISTICS <br /> The cha7racteristics of the wastewater flow will be predominately blackwater, and smaller volumes <br /> of gray water from sink water. Food preparation will not occur in the Produce Stand and it is my <br /> understanding that there will be no pipeline connection between the Produce Stand and the <br /> detached Men's and Women's Restrooms. All food and food by-product wastes must be handled <br /> as solid wastes and not be disposed of into the septic system. This will prevent concentrated <br /> organic loading and prolong the lifespan of the wastewater disposal system. <br /> It is also important that no industrial or commercial chemicals, solvents, excessive cleaners, etc. <br /> are introduced into the septic system, as well as other items such as sanitary napkins, any paper <br /> products other than toilet paper, cloth, plastic, cigarettes, etc. However, it is recognized that this <br /> is extremely difficult with public restrooms. <br /> WASTEWATER FLOW VOLUME PROJECTIONS <br /> A number of variables are involved in estimating wastewater Average Daily Flows (ADF) from a <br /> commercial facility. Wastewater flow volume projections for facilities in unsewered areas of San <br /> Joaquin County have been historically and typically calculated under one or more the following <br /> guidelines: <br /> 1. Data published in the San Joaquin County Sewage Standards. <br /> 2. Data published in the scientific literature. <br /> 3. Number of bathroom fixtures for a facility, leading to calculated bathroom use per capita. <br /> 4. Number of parking spaces for a facility. <br /> 5. Maximum number of known people on-site(e.g., employees, customers, etc.). <br /> 6. Historical wastewater flow data from an existing or comparable facility. <br /> However, the San Joaquin County Sewage Standards is very specific about wastewater flows from <br /> facilities such as Produce Stands: The Standards assigns 150 gallons per toilet fixture for"Stores" <br /> with employee and customer use. It is my understanding that there will be one toilet each for the <br /> Men's and Women's restrooms. These two toilets produce an Average Daily Flow (ADF) of 300 <br /> gallons per day(gpd). With modern, low-flow toilets at 1.5 gallons per flush means that each <br /> toilet would have to be flushed 100 times each day to meet the assigned standard. <br /> COMMERCIAL WASTEWATER CHARACTERISTICS <br /> Primary wastewater constituents-of-concern found in septic tank effluent have influence over two <br /> important factors in the operation of an on-site, decentralized wastewater disposal system: Soil <br /> effluent acceptance rates and nitrate-nitrogen impact. The Biochemical Oxygen Demand(BOD) <br /> test is the most common test used in wastewater analysis,but can be unreliable for determining <br /> organic matter in water. BOD is the amount of oxygen, expressed as mg/L or ppm, that bacteria <br /> take from water when they oxidize organic matter. <br /> 9 <br /> Chesney Consulting <br />
