Ms. Corinne E. King
San Joaquin County
Community Development Department Page Two
residential street where many people have lived their entire lives and then built their
own homes when they became adults and raised or are raising their children here too.
The "house warming" get together that was held at 9698 S. Priest Road a while back
was attended by no less than 350 people. There were tour buses full of people who
attended the event; over 200 cars were parked from one end of the property line to the
opposite property line. We understand the plan is to have one(1)Elder in residence at
the home located on this property and that the "center" is to have 50 members. The
traffic alone for 51 additional people on S. Priest Road on a daily basis is, to say the
least, disastrous. It is also our understanding that the plan includes the building of ten
(10) "cabins" on said property. Will these be occupied year around? What impact will
this have on our street, ie: sound increase, traffic impact, etc. There is definitely a need
for a complete environment impact report, not just a negative finding.
And then there are the "meditation center festivals" which we understand are going to
be held once or twice per year. On these festival days my neighbors and our families
will be forced to deal with extreme traffic congestion which on our street usually brings
along with it a problem with excessive speed. Our street is zoned 25 mph and 35 mph
for a short stretch, before returning to a 25 mph zone. How much noise will be emitted
from a property with 300-400 individuals having a festival on its grounds? Will there
be raised lighting to light the 80 foot tower or the entire grounds that will, again,
disturb those neighbors who have lived for years around this property with no troubles?
Also, there is no additional street parking available; doing so would create a hazardous
driving situation as our street is not wide enough to accommodate traffic flow and
parked cars on either side. As you are probably aware, there are no street lights on our
street and placing all this additional traffic on a dark country road does not seem
prudent.
There are a plethora of commercial properties within a very close radius of S. Priest
Road that are close to both highways 5 and 99 that would be a much better fit for the
"center" and would allow S. Priest Road to remain the quiet residential neighborhood it
has been for literally decades.
Again, it is our intent to share with you the negative effects that the addition of this
commercial meditation center would cause to our neighborhood. While at the same
time, we ask for your help, any that you may be able to provide us,to stop the
