October 12, 2005
NOA Project Number:E05142A
Page 2
with open ends and slots was placed in the hole. About 6-inches of pea gravel was placed in the
annular space around the pipe. The hole was pre-soaked 24 hours prior to the test with 12 inches
of water above the bottom of the hole.
During the percolation test, the fall of 6 inches of water was measured above the top of gravel
during the 4-hour test period. Measurements were made every 30 minutes for a four(4) hour
period. The pre-saturation of the test hole was performed on October 6, 2005. The percolation
test was performed on October 7, 2005.
Table 1.
Summary of the Percolation Tests
Test Date Boring Depth Duration * Result
P-1 deep 10-7-05 19 feet 4 hours Not completed
P-2 shallow 10-7-05 3.0 feet 4 hours Satisfactory perc rate
*Acceptable percolation rate is less than or equal to 60 min/in during the last measurement for a shallow test between
3 and 3.5 feet.Acceptable percolation rate is less than or equal to 30min/in during the last measurement for a deep
test between 3.5 and 25 feet.
The deep percolation hole was found to be filled with mud six feet above where the bottom of the
hole was drilled on October 4, 2005. Senior Environmental Health Inspector, Lisa Medina
recommended not using the deep hole for a percolation test. The deep percolation test was not
completed.
A satisfactory percolation rate was achieved in the shallow percolation test hole. The shallow test
meets the requirements for a satisfactory percolation rate established by the San Joaquin County,
Public Health Services, Environmental Health Division. Since the shallow test achieved
minimum EHD standards for a percolation rate, the site is suitable for a standard septic system
using leach lines and pits. According to personal communication on October 12, 2005 with Lisa
Medina, Senior Registered Environmental Health Inspector, the leach field is required to be ten
feet from any foundation. She noted the existing field is only eight feet away from the foundation
of the building to the east of the field. She also stated that the installation of an additional septic
tank will be required for EHD approval. For more information regarding the septic system sizing
and requirements, we recommend consultation with the EHD.
