I. INTRODUCTION <br /> This report issues my findings regarding the Nitrate Loading and Soil Suitability Studies for a <br /> single parcel of land owned by Mr. Les Calkins. These studies are required by the San Joaquin <br /> County Department of Environmental Health(EHD)under Community Development Title <br /> Chapter 9-1105.2 (d)1-5. This report complies with the San Joaquin County Development Title, <br /> Section 9-1105.2 for a Nitrate Loading Study and Soil Suitability Study. <br /> The Environmental Health Department requires Nitrate Loading and Soil Suitability Studies for <br /> projects in unsewered and currently nitrate affected areas, or for projects that may potentially <br /> impact the underlying groundwater with nitrate. Any improvement to the subject property must <br /> comply with the Environmental Health Department Regulations and Standards. As owner of the <br /> property, Mr. Calkins provided the preliminary information to complete these Studies. The <br /> attorney for this project is Mr. Jose Alva, Esq. The property is located in the northwest corner of <br /> the Highway 99 Frontage Road and Woodbridge Road. <br /> The primary concern of nitrate in drinking water is that high concentrations can cause <br /> methemoglobinemia in infants and it can also induce abortion or death in cattle. This disease <br /> occurs through a series of complex chemical reactions within the h( <br /> infants and young children are susceptible. The <br /> indigenous soils were analyzed and tested for their capacity to accept commercial wastewater <br /> flows, 2.) Property soil characteristics were assessed for nitrate impact and nitrate mitigation <br /> potential, 3.) Underlying groundwater from the drinking water aquifers was analyzed for the <br /> current nitrate concentration, and 4.) Examples of septic system components (e.g., septic tanks <br /> and leachfields)were provided to illustrate operational feasibility. <br /> To examine the nitrate loading potential of the subject parcel, nitrate loading calculations were <br /> done under two scenarios. First, loading calculations were done, for then r-firture ani .in tPrl <br /> wastewater flows, which were based upon provided information. Secondly, loading calculations <br /> were one to deet�ermine the maximum number of people the parcel c-a-T"in-Tividually supp= <br /> without exceeding the MCL for nitrate in drinking water, which is ppm (as NO3).
