WASTE DISCHARGE REQUIRENTS ORDER NO. "/ -3-
RIM ENTERPRISES,BROWNS LAKE RANCH,AND
RIVERCREST VINEYARDS,INC.
SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY
11. Compound concentrations in the unlined pond were characterized as follows:
Compound =_ — Units Concentration Range' --
BOD5 mg/1 54 - 75
Total Suspended Solids mg/1 190 - 250
Settleable Solids mg/1 7.5 - 10.1
TDS mg/1 120 - 440
Sulfate mg/1 ND - 12
Nitrate (as Nitrate) mg/1 ND - 35
' Samples collected in September and October during the 1999 crush season.
ND denotes Not Detected
12. Irrigation water from a nearby, and topographically lower, 15 acres of cropland is collected in tile
drains, which are manifolded to the tile drain sump pump located south of the pond. Drainage to
the sump occurs year-round. The tile drain water is pumped into the unlined pond. Water collected
from the tile drain sump was characterized as follows:
Compound Units Concentration Range
BODS mg/1 ND—3.8
Total Suspended Solids mg/1 ND
Settleable Solids mg/1 ND
TDS mg/1 70 - 370
Sulfate mg/1 2 - 68
Nitrate (as Nitrate) mg/1 ND - 92
ND denotes Not Detected
During a meeting on 6 December 1999, the Discharger stated that he would re-route the tile drain
line so that it no longer drains into the pond.
13. Stormwater drains to the process wastewater sump where it is pumped to the unlined pond and
commingled with the tile drain water and winery process wastewater.
14. Domestic wastes at the winery are discharged to a septic system. A 1,600 gallon septic tank and
300 linear feet of leach line were installed approximately 100 feet northwest of the northwestern
corner of the unlined pond.
15. Water for processing and domestic purposes is derived from a supply well, located approximately
320 feet from the northeast corner of the winery buildings, as shown on Attachment B. The well
depth is approximately 150 feet below ground surface (bgs) and depth to groundwater was reported
to be approximately 25 feet bgs. Samples from the well contained TDS (620 mg/1) and Nitrate
(150 mg/1 as nitrate).
16. Depth to shallow groundwater was reported to be between 20 to 26 feet bgs based on four soil
borings drilled for the RWD. Groundwater flow direction is unknown. Analytical results of
shallow groundwater samples from each of the borings were found to range between 440 to 990
