Soil Chemical Analysis <br /> Soil suitabilities and limitations for agricultural manure effluent application are based on the most <br /> severely rated soil property or properties. The capability of soil to receive agricultural manure <br /> effluent is classified in three categories: slight, moderate and severe. Slight is the rating given <br /> soils that have properties favorable for the use of agricultural manure effluent, moderate ratings <br /> are given soils that have properties that require less management or capital cost to mitigate than <br /> do the severe ratings; and severe ratings are given soils that require careful planning and <br /> stronger mitigation methods to overcome the severe limitation or hazard associated with one or <br /> more soil properties. <br /> The following categories represent specific areas that are commonly used to evaluate soil. <br /> Available water capacity: <br /> Available water capacity is the capacity of soils to hold water available for use by most plants. It is <br /> the difference between the amount of soil water at field moisture capacity and the amount at <br /> wilting point. The capacity, expressed as inches of water per inch of soil, in a 60-inch profile or to <br /> a limiting layer is referred to as follows:3 <br /> Very low 0 to 2.5 <br /> Low 2.5 to 5.0 <br /> Moderate 5.0 to 7.5 <br /> High 7.5 to 10.0 <br /> Very high More than 10.03 <br /> Site conditions of >6.0" are considered to have slight limitations. <br /> Site conditions of 3.0" to 6.0" are considered to have moderate limitations. <br /> Site conditions of <3.0" are considered to have severe limitations. <br /> Soils 193 is considered to have severe limitations to applications of agricultural manure effluent. <br /> It is recommended to reduce application rates and use split applications of manure effluent and <br /> flow deep into the soil profile due to low retention of this soil.
