Soil Sample Collection
Soil sample were collected using the following materials: shovel, rubber hammer, bucket, new zip
lock bags to hold samples, soils map, permanent marker, Chain of Custody form, ice chest with
ice.
The procedures are as follows:
1 . Identify locations from which samples will be taken. (Take at least one sample from
each different type of soil as shown on the soils map).
2. Assemble materials.
3. First Sample: 1 ft. to 2 ft. deep. Collect soil at 2 feet into a new zip lock bag. (Use a
tape measure to measure the depth of the hole). Label the bag according to labeling
procedures below. Put bag into cooler.
4. Second Sample: 3 ft. to 4 ft. deep. Collect soil at 4 feet into a new zip lock bag.
(Use a tape measure to measure the depth of the hole). Label the bag according to
labeling procedures below. Put bag into cooler.
5. Third Sample: 5 ft. to 6 ft. deep. Collect soil at 6 feet into a new zip lock bag. (Use
a tape measure to measure the depth of the hole). Label the bag according to
labeling procedures below. Put bag into cooler.
Labeling:
1. Use a felt tip permanent marker to label the bags.
2. Label each bag immediately after sample is taken.
3. Label the bags according to the location number and depth that it is taken from
on that ranch. The first location will be identified as site 1, the second location
will be identified as site 2, and so on. (i.e. S1-2', S24, S3-6', S4-2'...etc., "S"
represents "soil", 1" represents location number, and "-2"' represents 2 feet
depth collected).
4. Also label the bag with the date, time and depth of sample with a description of
sample location.
All soil samples collected for laboratory analysis were labeled and immediately placed into a ice
chest chilled to 4° Celsius and containing ice coolant. All sampling information was recorded on
the Chain of Custody forms. a
Refer to page 30 for Endnotes and Reference Sources
Soil Suitability Study
Property Name and Address: Frank Faria Dairy, Inc., 12182 S.
