An intermodal facility accommodates the transfer of freight
between various modes of transportation. In this case, the intermodal facility will continue to undertake
cargo container transfers in which cargo containers are transferred to and from trucks and railcars. The
facility serves as a transportation hub and railroad-to-truck transfer point for agricultural and other domestic
freight. Intermodal cargo units are transferred from rail car to truck for local and regional distribution and
from truck to rail car for long-haul shipment by rail.
The UP intermodal facility was built in 1993 to replace its Stockton Intermodal Facility and move the
operations from an urbanized area to the existing site. The existing facility is located on approximately 132-
acres. With the current facility operating at or near peak capacity, UP is proposing to expand the operating
footprint of the facility by 154 acres to the east and south and modernize facility equipment and
infrastructure.
The modernized facility will continue to operate 24-hours a day, seven days a week, year round. At full
buildout, the facility capacity will increase from 270,000 cargo container transfers to or from a rail car
('lifts") per year to 730,000 cargo container transfers per year, although Union Pacific forecasts that
actual cargo transfers will not approach full capacity until after 2035.
The project includes five new support tracks, two new working tracks, the lengthening of three existing
working tracks, and the construction of three new engine tracks to replace the existing engine tracks. In
addition, eight new buildings totaling 26,042 square feet will be constructed. 1,994 container bays exist at
the site and the project will add an additional 1,901 container bays. At full buildout, 3,895 container bays
will be provided. 89 employee/visitor parking spaces will also be provided at full buildout. The existing 9-
lane manual gate systems will be replaced and relocated by a new 10-lane Automated Gate System
San Joaquin County PA-0900184 & 185\Union Pacific
, Community Development Page 1
