At the southwest corner of the site are two water tanks and two pump houses that are used for fire suppression. Presently there is a small 0100-gallon) above ground diesel tank, and an approximately 450-gallon above ground gasoline tank between the two pump houses. Each tank is staged in secondary containment. On May 7 1986 an underground storage tank, (UST) used to store regular gasoline, was removed from the site. It is not clear what the tank size was because conflicting documentation refers to it as either 300-gallons or 450-gallons. The UST was located immediately behind the present above ground gasoline tank (Plate 3). There were no records available regarding when the tank was installed, inventory reconciliation, tank testing, or other operating information. Site Setting The Owens-Brockway facility is located at the western edge of the San Joaquin Valley southwest of the City of Tracy, California. The area is adjacent to the northern Diablo Range of the Coast Range geomorphic province. In the area, marine sediments striking to the northwest, and dipping to the northeast characterize the Diablo Range. Alluvial materials eroded from the adjacent Diablo Range underlie the site. _ Groundwater in the area flows generally to the northeast following surface topography. The site elevation ranges from 140 to 170 feet MSL. A series of groundwater monitoring wells have been installed at the site to monitor discharges from the wastewater treatment ponds. Ground,.4ater is encountered at depths ranging from 70 feet below grade at the south end of the site to approximately 50 feet below grade at the north side of the site. Previous Investigations At the time the UST was removed one soil sample was collected from the bottom of the excavation. The sample was submitted to California Water Labs of Modesto for analysis of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH); aromatic volatile organics by EPA Method 8020; total lead; and ethylene-dibromide, (EDB).
