Coarse-textured
sands and some muck soils are the only soils where ammonium leaching may be significant.
One way to minimize N leaching and denitrification is to minimize the time the N is in the soil
before plant uptake. This cuts down on the time when conditions are favorable for losses.'Proper
management of agricultural property significantly reduces the potential nitrate impact to ground
- water.
Mr. Dave Riley,Pest Control Advisor(PCA) for Valley Furro, is the farm advisor for Ehler
family farm operation. Mr. Riley provides recommendations for the application of fertilizer and
pesticides used on the farm. Since the farm utilizes a PCA,our office will assume the method of
application of nitrogen fertilizer and irrigation to the ground will minimize leaching of nitrogen
` to ground water to the best extent possible. Therefore, for purposes of this report, it is assumed
that the agricultural system is in balance and the leaching of nitrate is minimal. Agricultural
leaching of nitrogen will not be considered in the nitrate loading balance.
5.3 Nitrates from Winery Waste
The waste water generated from wine processing is the wash water needed to clean equipment
and clean the inside of the tanks. The winery waste water is typically generated between
September and November as indicated. It is planned that the winery waste water will be hauled
off the site. Since the waste water will not be disposed on the site, it will not be considered in the
nitrate loading balance.
5.4 Summary of Nitrate Balance
Table 5 presents the summary of the nitrate loading analysis utilizing the Hantzsche and
-- Finnemore method described previously. As a result of the analysis, the use of a septic system
` for six employees will not cause a build up of nitrates above the maximum contaminate level for
nitrates(10 mg/L-N) given the assumptions discussed previously. This is primally due to the
large size of the property and relative low daily flow of the septic system.
L
L,
9 Vitosb,M.L.,J.W.Johnson and D.B.Mengel,July 1995.Tri-state Fertilizer Recommendations for
Com,Soybeans,Wheat and Alfalfa,Extension Bulletin E-2567.
4
` rY
Z
O
Sp C
