November 23, 2004
NOA Project Number: E040140A
flow rate estimate. The flow rates selected for the uses associated with this project are presented in
the following table.
Table 1.
Typical Quantity of Effluent.
Category Total People Average Quantity per Average Daily Flow
per Day Person Per Parcel
Existing Residence 4 70 gal/day/person 4 residents/day*70 gpd/person
(3 bedroom) =280 gpd
Future Second Dwelling 3 70 gal/day/person 3 residents/day*70 gpd/person
Unit =210 gpd
(2 Bedrooms)
Winery 6 13 gaVday/worker 6 workers/day* 13 gpd/worker*3/7
Workers =33 gpd
Winery Guests (120/week) 3 gal/day/guest 40 guests/day*3 gpd/guest*3/7
40/day = 51 gpd
.. Note —gpd is gallons per day.The 3/7 factor accounts for the 3 day week.
The daily waste water quantity is estimated to be 574 gallons for the parcel. As stated, this number
includes the existing residence (full time occupancy), a future second dwelling unit of two bedrooms
(full time occupancy), and the winery tasting room open for three days per week. Each week the
winery will serve an average of 120 guests (40 guests per day, three days a week). The special events
utilize portable restrooms there are not included in the nitrate loading equation.
The average total nitrogen concentration of domestic waste water is normally considered to be
20-85 mg/L-N (Crites and Tchobanoglous, 1998). For the purposes of the nitrate loading estimate,
the long-term average concentration for total nitrogen in waste water is estimated to be 45 mg/L-N.
3.4.2 Denitrification Estimate
Denitrification is an important process which occurs within the leach field whereby certain bacteria
utilize the oxygen in the nitrate (NO3) and release nitrogen gas (ND to the atmosphere.
Denitrification is expressed as a percentage, and the normally accepted range is 10 percent to 35
percent. Soils with higher clay content,moist soil conditions,high pH, and organic material
denitrify by about 35 percent, and soils with high sand content and fast percolation rates are
estimated to denitrify at a lower rate, about 10 percent to 15 percent.
A denitrification factor of 10 percent was selected for the Site.
6 'A6
