SUMMARY OF IMPROVEMENTS
QUARESMA & SON DAIRY
26290 SOUTH UNION ROAD. MANTECA
IN SUPPORT OF RESCISSION OF
CEASE AND DESIST ORDER 98-720
Quaresma& Sons Dairy ("Quaresma") is located at 26290 South Union Road, Manteca,
California. Quaresma has always made the utmost effort to do a good job managing the cows
and land. In March 1998,the dairy experienced a tailwater spill. It should be noted that March
of 1998 was one of the highest recorded rainfalls of all time. Since this accident, Quaresma has
made many improvements to protect the environment around the dairy, and also to manage the
wastewater better. The following is a detaiied description of the improvements made since the
accidental spill:
1. Land Leveling and Land Drainage
The land was leveled to obtain a more even distribution of nutrients from the wastewater
spread across the fields. This leveling eliminated the spots where pooling of wastewater
would stand. Land drainage was improved to exit the wastewater promptly.
2. Pond Cross Levees
Pond cross levees were installed to enable the dairy to take out some of the solids from
the pond. It also improves digestion of the pond and makes the wastewater that is
irrigated with a more even distribution product.
3. Corral Fill and Drainage
All the corrals were cleaned up and a product called"Fly Ash"was placed in the corrals.
Quaresma contracted with the plant to do the whole dairy. Fill dirt was added in the
corrals to set the corrals to slope so that all the moisture would run off into drains that
would take the manure waste to the pond.
4. Pond
An excavator was hired to drag line the pond to clean and add footage of storage area for
the existing pond.
5. Return System Work
Two return systems were installed at the dairy. Approximately 2,400 feet of pipeline was
installed to carry the tail wastewater product back to the irrigation pipeline to re-circulate
the manure nutrients. One of the return systems allows Quaresma to put the wastewater
tail run-off back into the pond.
