6
cells also provide a food source for the incoming bacteria. Upon
completion of the sludge return, the MLT pump can again fill the
clarifier.
As the supernatant is transferred to the chlorine contact chamber,
a liquid chlorine solution is used to disinfect the supernatant.
AquaClear does not recommend the use of chlorine tablets, as they
are generally unreliable due to decomposition in high-humidity
environments which leads to failure of the tablet feed system;
also, hypochlorous acid (HOCL) is a much better disinfecting agent
than the hypochlorite ion (OCL) .
After 1 hour of chlorine contact time, the clarified and
disinfected effluent is pumped from the chlorine contact chamber,
first through the pressure filters then through the ozone mixer,
which is inline and fed by the ozone generator, then through the
ozone contact tower, which extends the ozone contact time, and out
to the pond. A small amount of liquid remains in the chlorine
contact chamber after discharge and is returned to the aeration
chamber for reprocessing. The contact time and dilution factor
render the chlorine in this small amount harmless to the on going
biologic activity in the aeration chamber.
The ozone inject during transfer from the chlorine contact chamber
provides conversion of chlorine residual in the final output to .a
chlorate which is taken up by plant life, thus making the receiving
body of water, safe for fish and fowl . With the ozone generator
installed, chlorine residual testing is accomplished at a tap in
the output of the chlorine contact chamber; the presence of
approximately 0 . 5 mg/L of chlorine at that point provides assurance
that there has been adequate chlorine contact time.
The conversion of chlorine residual by ozone also ensure, that, in
the case of irrigation, there will be no conversion of soil
minerals to salts and thus no forced buildup of salt-toxicity
within the soil .
NOTE: The ozone generator is sized at twice the
grams/hour requited for potable water treatment and will
negate the need for any chlorination at all should the
County Health Department not mandate its use. Many
states (most notably New York) are banning the use of
chlorine for any form of water/wastewater disinfection
and are relying on ozone and ultraviolet completely. The
chemical disinfectant potential (V) of ozone is 2. 07 as
opposed to 1. 36 for chlorine as HCLO or . 025 as an ion.
Ozone causes immediate destruction of bacteria and
viruses as opposed to merely altering the DNA to prevent
replication, as is the case with ultraviolet. Should
chlorine not be mandated for- this project, then the
chlorine contact chamber will either be eliminated from
the system or will be used as an additional clarifier
