8
settling takes place under quiescent conditions) so no activated
sludge is transferred to the next treatment step.
The Bio-Pure 500EFO-1 system clarifier has an operating capacity of
10, 823 gallons, of which 3 , 607 gallons are supernatant volume and
7 , 215 gallons are sludge volume. Because 100% of this sludge
volume is recycled back to the aeration chamber 14 times in every
24-hour period, and because of the low food-to-microorganism ratio
maintained in the aeration chamber, total sludge digestion is very
high and residual sludge production is very low.
Sludge wasting of 5% or 361 gallons, of the clarifier sludge volume
of 7, 215 gallons is performed whenever the SSV-60 test reaches 500
ml, which, based on systems now in operation, will probably occur
during the second year of operation. Should sludge wasting become
necessary, any portion greater than 5% of the clarifier sludge
volume may be pumped out by a licensed septic-waste hauler and
disposed of as required by law, or be placed in a small sludge
drying bed or deposited directly around floral vegetation. There
is no odor to this activated sludge.
The above wasting procedure follows recommendations described by
Dr. Kenneth D. Kerri and William Crooks in "Operation of Waste
Treatment Plants" published by California State University,
Sacramento, Department of Civil Engineering, in cooperation with
the California Water Pollution Control Association for the Federal
Environmental, Protection Agency, Office - of Water Program
Operations. (Dr. Kenneth D. Kerri is professor of Civil Engineering
at the above university. William Crooks is Executive Director of
the California State Water Quality Control Board. )
Should you have any question, please feel free to call.
Sincerely,
ROSE'S ENGINEERING EOLOGY & SURVEY INC.
Merw' F.
