reliability and maintainability. (A 1997 Yavapai County, Arizona, study of individual home aerobic
systems with chlorinators found that 85% of the chlorinators were not operating properly. This study
concluded that"the simple but maintenance intensive operation of chlorination is often overlooked by
the homeowner, and is difficult for an operator on a monthly or quarterly visit to keep up to standard
(ADEQ, 1997).")
Textile Filter
Fih.te i+—fine
- - ---
2 Companment 1500 Gallon fJnuem WW sy mn
Septic Tank Polishing Sand Filter
Figure 4: Burnett,WA Textile Filter System Schematic
Habitat for Humanity 1, Lapine, Oregon
Sponsored by Oregon's Department of Environmental Quality(DEQ) and Deschutes County, this textile
filter system (Figure 5) for a single family home was installed in November, 1998, as part of a five-year
project to evaluate new and innovative technology for denitrification of septic tank effluent. The
system is monitored monthly by DEQ. Testing is performed at four locations throughout the treatment
Oak system and at a monitoring well down gradient of the disposal field. This system is expected to produce
BOD, TSS, and total nitrogen of less than 10 mg/L and fecal coliform count of less than 400 MPN per
100 milliliters. Average results for the three tests performed since the first week of May 1999, are
shown below. DEQ will also be evaluating long-term and sustainable maintenance performance over a
five-year period.
Lapine, Habitat 1 Flow BODS TSS TKN NO3-n TN FC
gpd mg1L mg1L mg1L mg1L mg1L MPN/100 ml
Textile Filter Effluent 330 6.7 3.8 2 6 8 > 1000
I
fTeuile Filter _
A—by S
ArnWy
2 Competmem 1500 Gallon
1' Septic Tank
 roa.ao.p..euea
draiefeif
f?nYdieM
pwnp 6asw
i
Figure 5: Lapine,Habitat 1 Textile Filter System Schematic
NTP-FLT-TRB-ES8-HL8.l
2100
Page 7
