V. HEALTH HAZARD DATA <br /> Effects of Over-Exposure (Threshold Limit Value —see Section il.): <br /> Skin Contact ------ Can cause alkali burns from overexposure by removing natural skin oils. <br /> Lime saturated clothing, gloves and boots can rub against skin and cause severe burns. <br /> Eve Contact ------- Can cause severe irritation, redness and swelling. In addition to alkali <br /> irritation, lime can introduce grit under the eyelids, aggravating the irritation. <br /> Swallowing -------- Can cause irritation and burns to the mouth, throat, esophagus and other <br /> mucous membranes. <br /> Inhalation ---------- Can cause irritation to throat, lungs and other mucous membranes. <br /> Medical Condftions Aggravated by Overexposure: Inhalation may aggravate asthma and <br /> inflammatory or fibrotic pulmonary disease. Due to it's irritating properties, this material can <br /> aggravate an existing dermatitis. <br /> Emergency and First Aid Procedures: <br /> Skin Contact------ Wash with soap and water. Can use a weak vinegar solution to <br /> neutralize the alkali. Can apply a burn ointment (i.e.: boric acid salve). Report to First Aid. <br /> Eve Contact ------- Immediately Flush with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes. Check for <br /> grit particles under the eyelid and remove if present. Get prompt medical attention. <br /> Swallowina -------- Give two glasses of water. Do not induce vomiting. Get prompt medical <br /> attention. <br /> Inhalation ---------- Remove to fresh air. Give artificial respiration if not breathing. Oxygen <br /> may be civen if necessary. Get prompt medical attention. <br /> VI. REACTIVITY DATA <br /> Stability------------ Material is stable. <br /> Incompatibility---- Hydrated lime can react violently with strong ac?d8"'Also avoid contact <br /> with copper, silver, mercury and their salts, organic nitro-compounds, maelic anhydride, <br /> phosphorus, halogens. <br /> Hazardous Decomposition Products--- Calcium Oxide (quicklime) <br /> VII. ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION / SPILL OR LEAK PROCEDURES <br /> If Material is Released or Spilled --- Contain spill. Keep unneassary personnel away. <br /> Calcium hydroxide may exceed pH discharge limits. Prevent lime from entering sewers, <br /> storm drains or any water tributaries (drainage ditch, stream, river, etc.). Affected areas may <br /> be slippery. Sand or dirt can be used to stop lime slurry from spreading. <br /> Waste Disposal Method --- Prevent material from contaminating surrounding environment. If <br /> possible, shovel or pump spilled material into a container for re-use or disposal.
