Wear a suitable dust mask if lime
dust is present above the TLV limit.
Ventilation --- Not applicable unless dust is present above TLV. Because some acetylene
gas may be present in fresh carbide lime (see Section IV.), never enter a confined space
without proper authorization and do so only in accordance with local, state and federal
regulations.
Protective Gloves --- Waterproof rubber gloves must be worn when handling carbide lime.
Protective Clothing --- Wear waterproof protective clothing when in danger of close contact
with lime slurry. Immediately launder all clothing contaminated with lime. Rubber boots
should be worn when in danger standing in lime slurry. Boots and shoes that have been
soaked with lime should be discarded.
Eve Protection --- Safety glasses and/or chemical type goggles MUST be worn whenever
handling carbide lime slurry. Select in accordance with OSHA 29 CFR 1910.133.
IX. SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS
When handling carbide lime slurry, store only in open-topped water tight tanks suitable for
lime slurry. Do not use worn out or underrated hose, pipe or equipment that might develop
leaks.
Carbide lime is a caustic slurry or paste. Handle it with care and respect. Fresh carbide lime
generation may contain some entrapped flammable acetylene gas. Store and use with
adequate ventilation at all times.
The information expressed herein is compiled from Material Safety Data Sheets and
other information provided in good faith by the industrial gas industry, the lime
production industry, the Department of Labor (Occupational Safety and Health
Administration) and other sources.
