O/LDC —3— 12 July 1990
DHS
SECTION NICKEL ZINC
A -- <0.10
C -- 0.24
E 2.3 0.19
J 6.7 12
All concentrations are in mg/l
-- = not analyzed
INSPECTION SUMMARY
The results from the analyses for nickel are in fairly close agreement between
the two labs. However, the two labs reported very different results for zinc in
samples A, C, E, H, and J. The Total Threshold Limit Concentrations (TTLC) for
nickel and zinc are 2,000 and 5,000 mg/kg, respectively. The Soluble Threshold
Limit Concentrations (STLC) for nickel and zinc are 20 mg/l and 250 mg/1 ,
respectively. The samples collected during this inspection contained nickel and
zinc concentrations which were well below the STLC and TTLC values. However,
soil still remains in the impoundment with concentrations of nickel and zinc
above the established background levels of 16 and 60 mg/kg, respectively.
The DHS will be doing a risk assessment for the impoundment, based on the
remaining concentrations of nickel and zinc. The risk assessment should be
completed by the end of July 1990. Although we have received the raw data from
the samples collected during this inspection, we have not received a final report
from RSI. The submittal of the report should coincide with the completion of the
risk assessment so that we may determine the next step in closing the
impoundment.
AN McCUE
Water Resource Control Engineer
JEM:jm
