O/LDC -2- 12 July 1990
I left the site at noon. RSI's hand sampler broke twice while I was observing
the sampling of the impoundment floor. Each time, Mr. Grossman took it to the
shop at the facility to have it welded. After the sampler broke the first time,
Mr. Pletcher contacted RSI's office to have a backup sampler brought to the site.
The sampler arrived just as I was leaving. I was only able to observe the
samples that were collected from sections A through E. Ms. Hogg observed the
rest of the sampling of the impoundment.
RSI planned to sample the stockpiled soil after all the samples were collected
from the impoundment. Mr. Pletcher stated that Forward's agreement to accept the
soil was contingent on the laboratory results of the soil samples collected from
the stockpile. They planned to collect eight samples from the stockpile. Each
sample would be composite of four grab samples. The samples would be analyzed
for nickel and zinc. The results should be included in their report.
Mr. Pletcher stated that the turnaround time for the samples would be five days.
He asked Ms. Hogg if they could backfill the excavation if the laboratory results
showed the concentrations of nickel and zinc in the soils remaining in the
impoundment were at background levels. Ms. Hogg stated that the impoundment
could not be backfilled until after the end of the public review period (9 June
1990) and the final approval of the Closure Plan.
SAMPLE RESULTS
The laboratory results of the samples collected by RSI and DHS are as follows:
RSI DHS
SECTION NICKEL ZINC NICKEL ZINC
A 17 160 <25.0 119
B 12 35 <25.0 43.4
C 18 190 <25.0 36.3
D 11 37 <25.0 29. 1
E 240 120 171 41 .0
F 42 37 30.0 28.3
G 30 48 -- --
H 25 44 <25.0 203
I 8.0 33 <25.0 25. 1
J 110 230 95.0 180
K 44 52 28.0 39.1
L 2. 1 16 <25.0 32.9
All concentrations are in mg/kg.
-- = not analyzed
The results of the WET run on samples from quadrants A, C, E, and J are as
follows:
