lFensweeir.c. SACRAMENTO
3.0 SOIL INVESTIGATION
This section describes the proposed methodology for determining the lateral and
vertical extent of contaminated soil at the site. Included in this section are descriptions
of the proposed methods and procedures, field screening, storing and disposal'of wastes,
and borehole abandonment. Figure 3 shows the proposed borehole locations.
3.1 Soil Coring Investigation Methods and Procedures
To determine if soil contamination exists in the soils surrounding a series of four
boreholes will be cored in the accessible areas of the site. The corings will be.located
such that the areas surrounding the four sides of the building will each be sampled for
contamination. The coring on the east side of the building will be located easti'. of the
previous air compressor location to sample for possible contamination from the
compressor, as well as any possible contamination from neighboring USTs. The corings
will be hydraulically hammered using a truck-mounted mobile drilling rig equipped with €
two-inch hydraulic corers.
All down-hole equipment including hydraulic carers, bits, and sampling equipment
will be thoroughly cleaned before and after the drilling of each borehole. ;A high- s
i
pressure steamer will.be used to clean the hydraulic corers, split-spoon samplers, and
h
other equipment as necessary. Pending disposal, waste water generated duYring this
process will be stored in' 55-gallon drums approved by the Department of Transportation
(DOT).
A Versar geologist will be onsite to log;each borehole as it is cored. The soils
encountered will be characterized according to the United Soil Classification`System
(ASTM D-2487), and will include notations of!all other pertinent characteristics. A
geologist registered in the State of California will review°the drill logs produced.
5
