File No. 249947 20 May 1991 Page 5
1.4 Purpose
This investigation was designed to do the following:
1) Bus Maintenance Building. Excavate the areas of the anomalies observed
' near the former maintenance building during the geophysical survey of the
site. Determine, if possible, the source of the anomalies and observe the '
subsurface for evidence of contamination.
i2) Bus Garage. Excavate one or more trenches in the vicinity of the former
bus garage and inspect subsurface soils for evidence of contamination.
' 3) Car Wash. Attempt to excavate one or more of the sand and grease
traps to observe the conditions of the soil beside and under the traps.
' (Our experience with similar concrete traps and sumps suggests that soil
contamination may exist in the soil surrounding the traps.)
1.5 Scope
Bus Building Anomalies. The areas of the two anomalies were excavated using a
' backhoe, and inspected for the presence of tanks. The excavated soil was inspected
for visual and olfactory evidence of contamination. The soil was also screened for
the presence of volatile organic constituents using an H-Nu brand photoionization
' device (PID). Soil samples were collected from the material excavated.
Throughout this investigation, soil samples were collected in brass tubes by pushing
' or driviing the tubes into the soil in the backhoe bucket. The tubes were covered
with Teflon tape and placed on ice immediately after collection. Chain of custody
documentation was maintained at all times. Our work will be performed under the
1 guidelines outlined in the State of California Regional Water Quality Control Board
Leaking Underground Fuel Tank Manual.
' The samples were analyzed for total petroleum hydrocarbons (EPA Method 8015),
and volatile constituents (EPA Method 8020). The excavation was then backfilled
once our examination was completed.
Bus garage. Two trenches were excavated in the vicinity of the former bus garage.
The excavated soil was inspected for visual and olfactory evidence of contamination,
' and was screened using a PID for the presence of volatile organic constituents. Soil
samples were collected from the area; select samples were analyzed for total
petroleum hydrocarbons (EPA Method 8015), and volatile constituents (EPA
' Method 8020). After inspection, the trenches were backfilled.
FNGERGGN
' GROUP TING
GROUP
