An area of
reinforced concrete measuring 1 foot in thickness was uncovered at this location. Z
1 The concrete could not be broken by the backhoe; however, a trench was dug alone .
the southern edge of the thickened section of concrete. The soil beneath the t
concrete did not appear to have been disturbed. No evidence of soil contamination /1
1 was encountered in this area. A soil sample (S-3) was obtained from beneath the
concrete pad.
1 Since the mechanic's pit was directly south of the small anomoly, the small anomoly
was probably located inside the maintenance building as well. The thickened slab
may have been a footing for a structural support or heavy equipment such as an
1 engine lift. Based on the location of the anomoly, our information concerning the
placement of the fuel tanks, and the lack of evidence of disturbed soil or fill, we do
not believe it is likely that a tank would have existed in this location. However,
' since we were unable to examine the soil directly underneath the thickened slab, we
cannot conclusively state this to be the case.
Evidence of Contamination. The soil from the anomalous areas was inspected for
' visual and olfactory evidence of petroleum contamination. No such evidence was
found. The soil was scanned for volatile petroleum-based contaminants using a
PID meter. No positive readings were obtained.
1 Samples S-1, S-2, and S-3 were then analyzed for total petroleum hydrocarbons
(EPA Method 8015), and volatile constituents (EPA Method 8020). The results of
1 laboratory analyses are included in Section 2.2.
1 Bus garage. Two trenches were excavated in the vicinity of the former bus garage.
The trenches, excavated to a depth of approximately 4.5 feet, were located in the
approximate positions of the southern and eastern walls of the bus garage. (See
1 Figure 3). Trench 1 was excavated 11 feet north of the southern property border.
The trench was oriented east-west and was approximately 250 feet in length.
Trench 2 was excavated approximately 60 feet west of the Lucky Store. This trench
1 was oriented north-south and was approximately 30 feet in length. Both trenches
extended beyond the dimensions of the former bus garage.
' In this area, the upper 4.5 feet of the subsurface was found to consist of a dark
brown sandy silt with minor clay. The soil was damp, loose, and micaceous, and
became clayier with depth.
1 No visual or olfactory evidence of hydrocarbon contamination was encountered in
either Trench 1 or Trench 2. No positive PID readings were noted. Some debris
1 was seen in Trench 1, including glass fragments, and two sections of abandoned 4
inch diameter water pipe.
1
ANDERSON
ONSULI
C
1 GNGULTING
GROUP
0
