nDL C I WEB
iI '
Pacific Gas and APR 2008
SAN Boa
1161 Electric Company' . 1c;uNn•
Y ENVIRONMEN lt,L HEALTH DEPT.
BUILDING DEMOLITION
WORK NOTICE
Former Manufactured Gas Plant
712 South Sacramento Street
Lodi, California
Pacific Gas & Electric Company (PG&E) is circulating this work notice to inform the community
that a small one-story building will be demolished on or about April 22, 2008 at 712 South
Sacramento Street, Lodi, California (see map and photograph next page). From 1913 to 1928,
the site housed a manufactured gas plant that produced gas for city lighting and residential
purposes. The manufactured gas plant originally was built and operated by the Sacramento
Natural Gas Company (which in 1914 was renamed the Sacramento Gas Company) and was
purchased by PG&E in 1926. The 0.73-acre site is currently a vacant lot. The majority of the Site
is paved and there is a small one-story building (the old manufactured gas plant store room and
meter house) located in the northwest corner of the property.
Manufactured gas plants are a part of the history of California and the United States. From the
mid-1800's to the mid-1900's, prior to the development of natural gas transmission systems,
utility companies nationwide operated local plants that converted coal or oil into gas for lighting,
heating and cooking. Many of these operations left a legacy of soils impacted by polycyclic
aromatic hydrocarbons and petroleum byproducts. PG&E, under the direction of the California
Environmental Protection Agency, Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC), intends to
investigate the soil and groundwater to determine the extent of impacts from the manufactured
gas plant operations and the best methods to clean up the site.
As a first step in the investigation and cleanup of the former manufactured gas plant, PG&E
intends to demolish the old meter house building on or about Tuesday, April 22, 2008.
Necessary permits have been obtained for building demolition. The building will be removed to
its foundation. Work will be conducted so as to minimize disruptions to area businesses and
workers. To ensure the safety of on-site workers, work will be conducted in accordance with a
site Health and Safety Plan. Workers will wear safety gear while working on-site and operating
heavy equipment. An on-site project manager will be available to answer questions and
address concerns.
If you have any questions about this work, please contact PG&E's Project Manager, Melitta
Rorty at (415) 973-9654 or m2rq@pge.com or PG&E's Public Affairs Manager Stephanie
Isaacson at (415) 973-4188 or sli4@pge.com.
