BA 9-16-81
Puryiance
-11-
lie said lie recently noticed two gravel trucks stopped in front of his property.
Fie asked the drivers why they could not slow down through the residential
area. He said he received the response of "Why?". He noted that the more
loads, the more money received, and the faster the drivers go. He said the
speed limit is 40 MPH and the trucks are driven 45 and 50 IL H.` He said there
is a blind curve in the area and there are children around. He said they
already have the dump and the gravel quarry to put up with and he did not want
to see the problems increased.
Robyn Drummond, Shelton Road, said that her house is situated in the curve and
she was concerned that a loaded gravel truck may not negotiate the curve and
would hit her house. She said she has one small child. She said that condi-
tions must be enforced. Waverly and Flood Roads should be paved. She noted
the hazard from gravel spills.
Mary Hawley, 9156 N. Shelton Rd. , said she did not necessarily want to speak
in opposition but wanted to make some facts known. She said her property is
close to this project; the watershed has been a problem here ; water comes down
from the hills and at times floods their driveways; some measures must be
taken to protect the property owners in the area. Also, she said they must
look out for the quality of life there and be a little bit careful. During
the past four years at least three passenger cars have gone into the ditch in
front of the Drummond home; a gravel truck could go into the ditch as well;
there should be a stop sign at the intersection.
Steve Auten, 8251 E. Waverly, agreed with Mrs. Drummuond ; they are due west of the
site; he would be very concerned if something happened to his children due to
a traffic problem; She said there is a wide turn at the base of the steep
grade ; a school bus stops at the base of this blind curve. He said there
are buses in the area in the morning and in the mid-day. lie felt there had
to be some traffic control.
Marcos Mendez, 9500 Shelton Road, commented that if the truckers would obey
the speed limit, there would be no problem. He said the past practices of
the operator could indicate that the project could have a severe degradation
on the property value of his ranch from flooding and the use of explosives.
He said that explosions can spook his cattle and this can cause abortions.
William Leachman, 26842 E. Shelton Rd. , concurred with statements rade by the
opposition. He said they are part of the com-munity and they would like to see
this community grow and advance. This Board has the responsibility to look
at the total picture. Ile said there will be an economic impact on the County
road and there is a safety situation. He said the road safety and the compat-
ibility of this project are inseparable issues ; the road cannot be made any
safer but the trucks can be made to slow down. However, the incentive is to
have speeding trucks since the drivers are paid by the load. Mr. Leachman
said he has two children who ride the bus.
Elmer Sitkin, 28631 Shelton Rd. , said that 35 years ago he and his wife were
married. His wife is the daughter of Mrs. Cady ; the Cady family have had a
beautiful ranch in the area for many years. He noted the assaults on the
