TRACY W WTP-TASK 14 TOS MONTORING WELL WSTALLATION WORK RAN
Drilling Details and Field Operations
This section summarizes key field methods and procedures that will be used during field
work at the site
Permitting and Utility Clearance
Well-drilling permits will be obtained by the driller from the San Joaquin County
Environmental Health Department prior to commencing field activities. Underground
utilities will be located by notifying underground service alert(USA)at 1-800-227-2600 for
offsite utility clearance,as well as the City for onsite utility information after the well sites
are marked with flagging and white paint. If there is question about the location of
underground utilities,CH2M HILL will contract with a private utility locating service to
clear sample location in areas where utilities are known to be present.
Overhead power lines are located along the fence line near Sites A and B. The required
minimum separation of 10 feet between the power lines and any part of the drilling
equipment will be maintained at all times. This includes both during drilling and moving
the rig. The rig will not be moved when the mast is raised.
Site Security and On-Site Supervision
No additional security or access issues are expected to be required. Drilling and installing
three shallow monitoring wells is expected to require less than 2 days of field effort. Site A
-the only drilling location outside the secured plant facility-is planned to be installed first.
Sites B and C will be installed inside the secured plant facility.
Borehole drilling and monitoring well installation will be directed by a California
Professional Geologist.
Borehole Drilling and Sample Logging
Boreholes for the investigation will be drilled using the hollow-stem auger(HSA)technique.
Borings will be approximately 35 feet below grade. Native soils will be logged at 5-foot
intervals in accordance with the Unified Soil Classification System. Borehole drilling,
borehole advancement, and soil logging will be performed by the onsite professional
geologist in accordance with ASTM D2488.
The outer diameter of the HSAs-and therefore the borehole-will be 11 inches in diameter.
Drilling and monitoring well installation will be conducted by a licensed and bonded
driller. Sample descriptions will be recorded directly onto CH2M HILLs standard boring
log form. Site and drilling information will be maintained on the daily field activities form.
Decontamination Procedures
Drilling equipment(rig, auger, rods, etc) will be steam-cleaned prior to arriving at the Tracy
W WTP. After arrival it will be cleaned again on the W WTP property to confirm that drilling
equipment is clean prior to initiating drilling activities. Downhole equipment will be steam-
cleaned between boreholes and after drilling activities are completed.
00*w 31,2007 5
