#RXO0040-2011
03!16/11
Special P -Listed Waste Trash Handling (Select Stores)
Overview:
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has designated certain wastes as "hazardous" and
placed special restrictions on their accumulation and disposal. These EPA restrictions also
apply to the empty containers which are not suitable for disposal through normal store trash
programs. These select wastes are referred to as "P -Listed" wastes and include:
■ Epinephrine ■ Coumadin
■ Warfarin ■ Nicotine
Note: While pure Phentermine is considered a P -Listed waste,
Phentermine HCL dispensed in retail pharmacy does not qualify.
❑ In addition to the above listed items, any products that are repackaged or damaged, that are
not eligible for credit, are also considered hazardous waste in the state of California.
❑ Rite Aid has partnered with StrongPak for the handling of P -Listed and hazardous waste
and will pilot this process in select stores in California. The process involves:
➢ A separate waste receptacle for the disposal of this waste.
➢ Periodic visits from StrongPak to evaluate and inspect the waste generated.
➢ Removal of this waste through StrongPak store service visits.
➢ The StrongPak process ONLY applies to P -Listed and hazardous waste and not for
normal outdated or sharps waste.
Examples of P -Listed and hazardous waste handled through the StrongPak process:
➢ Empty stock bottles of Warfarin/Coumadin products.
➢ Any returned to stock product that is not in the original packaging, past expiration date
and has no value. This includes OTC products used in the pharmacy.
➢ Empty return to stock bottles or vials containing Warfarin/Coumadin product. (This
includes empty patient vials presented for refill).
➢ Damaged loose tablets (e.g. — those that fall on the floor, broken tablets etc.).
➢ Chemical waste and residue generated from cleaning the pharmacy counter (alcohol
swabs or wipes) or in compounding (parchment paper).
➢ Damaged Nicotine gum, Nicotine lozenges, Nicotine patches or Nicotine inhalers.
Action:
Each store involved in this special waste process will receive an initial visit from a StrongPak
representative to set up a special receptacle for placing this waste.
❑ Each StrongPak representative is required to provide appropriate identification. Follow all
policies and procedures regarding access to the pharmacy.
