Ms. Mary Meays Page 3
May 16, 1994
c. Sample, 1BS2 W19, collected on October 15, 1993 at 9.5 feet, did not evidence
soil contamination; however, PHS/EHD field observations indicated that
strong odors were observed at the time of sample collection.
Much of the soils at this site are fill and/or dredge spoils from the
construction of the Stockton Deep Water Channel. It is not unusual for such
soils to exhibit odors of an organic nature because of the presence of humic
materials.
3. Tank #2 area
a. Sample, E2N6, collected on October 6, 1993 at 9 feet, evidenced soil
contamination; however, its location was not indicated on Figure 3.
Soil sample location E2N6 was not a confirmation soil sample and was
collected within the boundaries of the final excavation (note the reference
point on Figure 4 from which all sample location distances were measured).
This soil sample was collected during excavation activities to determine
whether or not the extent of affected soils had been defined. After the
sample result indicated the presence of chemicals above cleanup goals,
excavation of soils continued in that area. The soils defined by sample E2N6
were excavated and treated; therefore, its location was not depicted on
Figure 3.
b. Sample, E28N10, collected on October 6, 1993 at 8 feet, evidenced soil
contamination; however, its location was not indicated on Figure 3.
Soil sample location E28N10 was not a confirmation soil sample and was
collected within the boundaries of the final excavation (note the reference
point on Figure 4 from which all sample location distances were measured).
This soil sample was collected during excavation activities to determine
whether or not the extent of affected soils had been defined. Sample, BW9N18, collected on October 7, 1993 at 10 feet, evidenced soil
contamination; however, its location was not indicated on Figure 3.
Soil sample location BW9N18 was not a confirmation soil sample and was
collected within the boundaries of the final excavation (note the reference
s point on Figure 4 from which all sample location distances were measured).
This soil sample was collected during excavation activities to determine
whether or not the extent of affected soils had been defined.
