7=eHleaven
sed Heaven Temple
Temple Restrooms are proposed to be used extensively only 3x/yr during the Buddhist
New Year, which is a consecutive three day event. Use of the Restrooms throughout the remaining
days of the year may only amount to 10%of this maximum three-day usage according to the Father
Monk.
The number of plumbing fixtures within the on-site existing Temple Men's/Women's Restrooms
will be used to calculate average daily flows (ADFs) based on an assumed maximum fixture usage
of 3x/hr; 8 hrs/d, 3 dpy: Men's: 9 toilets, 7 urinals; Women's: 16 toilets=32 fixtures x 2 gals/use
(1.5 galsflush+ 0.5 gals hand washing)= 64 gals/use x 3 uses/hr= 192 gals/hr x 8 hr/day= 1,536 gals/day x 3 days
of each year=4,608 gals. Ten percent usage the remaining days of the year: 1,536 x 10%= 154 gpd
x 362 dpy= 56,064 gals.
This yearly flow volume figure totals: 805,920 (residential); 105,120 (existing Temple) and(4,608
+ 56,064 -proposed Heaven Temple)=971,712 gpy. This figure will be used for the yearly
wastewater generation of the entire facility for the nitrate loading calculations below.
Wastewater Characteristics
To accurately quantify nitrogen concentrations to calculate nitrate loading, a septic tank effluent
sample was taken from the second compartment of the second tank that serves the existing Temple
before the effluent flows to the disposal area. The Table below reveals the TKN to be 89.6 mg/L.
The nitrate concentration was reported at<2.5 mg/L, however, according to Denele Labs, this is
equivalent to non-detect(ND) and due to reporting purposes, this figure must be used.
This concentration of 90 mg/L of TN will be used in the loading calculations below. The scientific
literature cites nitrogen concentrations in domestic septic effluent at a value of 62 mg N/L(See
Kaplan-Septic Systems Handbook,Pg. 147). Consequently, this is a 45% increase in nitrogen
concentration used in the calculations.
TABLE 5
SEPTIC TANK EFFLUENT SAMPLED FROM SECOND 1,200 GALLON TANK
DIRECTLY EAST OF THE TEMPLE RESTROOMS:
ANALYTICAL RESULTS OF TESTED CONSTITUENTS
SAMPLE ID NITRATE-NO, TOTAL AMMONIUM ORGANIC TOTAL p1I
KJELDAHL NITROGEN- NITROGEN ALKALINITY
NITROGEN NH,
(TKN)
WAT S.T.EFF. <2.5(ND)mg/L 89.6 mg/L 75.6 mg/L 14 mg/L 616 mg/L 6.9
Page -7-
Chesney Consulting
